This model contest began in 2006 with the intent of emphasizing Customizing Excellence in automotive subjects of all types and the “true” hot rod. The KKOA itself was founded in 1980 with the same intent for cars and rods. True to that underlying philosophy, the decision was made to have the model car competition be only open to CUSTOMIZED models and true, traditional hot rods.
Check out the rules and details below! Hit the modeling bench and… we’ll “See you in Salina” on Saturday, July 24! |

General Rules - * Only customized vehicles are eligible for awards. However, any model vehicle is welcomed as a display. The KKOA is all about customs and design and this model contest reflects the KKOA philosophy. * Only the model itself (along with a display base if included) can be exhibited. No previous awards of any type may be displayed along with the model. No electricity is provided. * Only the Handbuilt Category entries must be completely from scratch. All other categories may be based upon an existing kit – plastic or other materials – although they certainly may be scratchbuilt. * A model that has received a KKOA Model Kemp Spectacular Award in any previous year is not eligible for an award in this contest. * Judging will be done exclusively by Hall of Fame Members present at the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular and will be selected by the KKOA. Their decisions are final. * In the unlikely case of any complaint or question, the final decision will be the responsibility of the head judge for the event.
(Special Note - ONLY paid Entrants with kustoms and true hot rods will be eligible for awards - although other models may be displayed at no charge.)
THE FOUR ACES SUPERSTAR AWARDS
(Adult Building Categories - All entries should be built to fit one of these!) Handbuilt - Custom vehicles that are handbuilt or scratchbuilt, not available in kit form. Best Junior Kustom Kemp - A Kustom or Hot Rod model done by a modeler age 18 or younger. All work must be done exclusively by the young modeler. AND The Elden Titus Creative Concept Design Award - In the spirit of the way Elden used scale-models to plan and execute his full-size custom designs, this award will be presented to a scale-model Kustom vehicle that exhibits originality, radical thinking, innovative design, and quality craftsmanship. The winning model should go far beyond merely chopping, channeling, and the other traditional means of customizing. In addition, the model should have the unique ability to conceivably be translated into a full-size "one-off" kustom vehicle. The modeler may present along with the model, sketches, schematics, and specifications to demonstrate and explain the creative process. THIS AWARD CARRIES A CASH BONUS OF $100!
